Calm conditions at the beginning of the 3rd round proved for excellent scoring conditions as one of the strongest fields in Hi5 Pro Tour history got underway for the final round of the Condado de Alhama Open. Romain Wattel soon got off to an amazing start carding 4 birdies in 7 holes and increased his lead to 4 shots going into the final 9 holes. However the wind that was more or less present for the entire tournament returned with a vengeance for the final 9 holes and Wattel doubled the par 4 10th followed by another bogey on 13 and saw his lead slip to 2. However the 19 year old frenchman was not at all disturbed as he made another birdie on 16 and a great par save on 17 to enjoy a 3 shot lead going into the final hole. After a superb tee shot that left him 100m to the hole, the newly turned professional hit a miraculous shot to 30 cm to the hole for another birdie and his first professional victory and the 4125 Euro cheque. Wattel recently won a Challenge Tour event in September as an amateur and was rated 3rd in the world amateur rankings. In second position was Florian Fritsch of Germany and european tour player Eirik Tage Johansen both at -5. For full results see the leaderboard on the right side of the web site.
Roumain Wattel the newly turned professional from France who recently won on the European Challenge Tour in France during September along with Scotland’s Elliot Saltmann both share the lead at Condado after the 36 hole mark. Both players are currently at -6 but only hold a narrow 2 shot margin over European Tour player Eirik Tage Johansen from Norway and Elliot’s younger brother Lloyd who also plays on the Challenge Tour. The top international field had somewhat of a golf marathon today as Round 1 was not completed yesterday due to the strong winds that swept across Condado and caused the event to be suspended. However favorable conditions allowed the entire field to complete all 36 holes on time today. The final round commences tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
Round one of the 50,000 Euro Hi5 Pro Tour Fall series had to be suspended due to a severe weather system that has swept through Spain with its high winds. Officials were constantly monitoring the situation and the first stoppage of play occurred at 12:55 today. Play resumed briefly but the weather further deteriorated and a complete suspension of round one’s play was announced at 15:00. Play will resume tomorrow morning for all players at 8:00 a.m.
The Hi5 Pro Tour released today its popular yearly 4 event series. This winter the 4 events will feature a 120,000 Euro Prize Fund and be held throughout the Murcia Region of Spain. Located along the beautiful Costa Blanca and the Mediterranean, the Hi5 Pro Tour will offer professionals from around the globe excellent “off season” competitions throughout the winter. The Hi5 Pro Tour directors, Wayne Hachey and Nigel German hope that with their newly added Fall Series that starts this coming Tuesday, they will see many of the players competing move successfully forward to the final stage of the European Tour School.” In our 3 year history, it has been exciting for us to see already 4 of our players win on the main European tour”. We are excited and very optimistic even during these tough economic times. We both feel we are helping assist these young players with important steps towards their professional golfing careers and that makes our job very enjoyable.”
